The college football season has arrived by preparing us with a Week 0 appetizer. Before Kansas State and Iowa State took the field in a soggy stadium, there were a few stories worth sharing that could only happen in college football.

College Football Invades Ireland

Starting a college football season in Ireland doesn’t feel quite right. However, it’s not going to stop fans from making the trek across the pond to see the sights around the Emerald Isle before watching their favorite team in action.

I don’t have to tell you that Ireland has a rich history of pubs, particularly around Dublin. Whenever they host American sports teams, the pubs get decked out to welcome the fans. This year, somebody misunderstood the assignment.

Texas A&M gets a Buccee’s

If a Cracker Barrel Country Story and a gas station shared offspring with the Mall of America, it would be a Buccee’s. The enormous truck stops are always full, all of the time. It’s a testament to American ingenuity, and it all started in Texas. That may explain why there is now a Buccee’s on Texas A&M’s campus.

It’s far from the experience you’ve come to know and love. Rather than building a monolithic gas station in College Station, Buccee’s is essentially setting up souvenir stands at three dining locations across campus. Students will be able to pick up Beaver Nuggets, beef jerky, and other branded merch at the shops. It’s not quite the same as a trip to Buccee’s, but it’s not a bad consolation prize.

Bowling Green Adds a New Furry Mascot

Things get a little weird in MACtion. One team is setting the tone early.

During fall camp at Bowling Green, the Falcons got a new friend in the locker room. No, it’s not a bird. They’ve brought in a fluffy Persian cat named Pudge. Even though Pudge seems totally uninterested in what’s happening around him, he does look adorable in a Bowling Green jersey. Offensive tackle Alex Wollschlaeger traded a Persian cat to be a Kentucky Wildcat.

Four More College Football National Championships

Until 1997, college football did not decide its National Champion with a game. A top bowl often pitted the top two teams against each other, but it was the AP Pollsters who decided the National Champion.

This silly method for deciding a champion allowed schools to claim them, even if they weren’t the No. 1 team in the final AP Poll. Auburn decided to do that ahead of the 2025 season. The Tigers claimed four new National Championships from 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004, bringing their total to nine. Why make this sort of statement now? They could be in for a long fall on The Plains.
