As the WNBA tips off its new season on Friday, teams around the league are finalizing their rosters and gearing up for the demanding 44-game regular season.
On Wednesday, a former teammate of 2025 WNBA Draft top pick Paige Bueckers became one of the players cut during final roster moves.
Despite her talent, high basketball IQ and reputation as a great teammate, Kaitlyn Chen was released by the Golden State Valkyries.
The news was first reported Wednesday afternoon by Maggie Vanoni:
"The Golden State Valkyries announced today they've waived former UConn point guard Kaitlyn Chen."

Chen saw limited action in the preseason, playing seven minutes against the Los Angeles Sparks on May 6, and just five minutes in Golden State’s most recent game.
Still, she made WNBA history as the first Taiwanese player to appear in a league game.
Chen and Bueckers shared one season at UConn, but it was a memorable one. Together, they led the Huskies to the 2025 NCAA Tournament championship. That year, Chen averaged 6.9 points and 3.4 assists per game.
Before transferring to UConn, Chen was a standout at Princeton. She earned First-Team All-Ivy League honors twice and was named Ivy League Player of the Year in 2023. During her three seasons with the Tigers, she averaged 10.5, 16.2 and 15.8 points per game.
The Golden State Valkyries are entering their inaugural season as a WNBA franchise. They’ll make their debut Friday when they host the Los Angeles Sparks.
Their second home game is set for May 21 against the Washington Mystics, followed by their first-ever road game on May 23 in Los Angeles.
