The Allen High School boys basketball team was playing its best basketball of the season during the playoffs. and so was freshman guard Landin Tenequer.
The Mustangs’ lone playoff losses came at the hands of No. 3 Rattan, who later advanced to the Class A State semifinals. The Rams needed four overtimes to overcome Allen in a thrilling Class A Area Tournament contest.
Tenequer averaged 18.6 points per game during Allen’s late playoff push and was named The Ada News All Area Boys Freshman of the Year.
“As a freshman, I thought he played really well down the stretch,” Allen boys coach Greg Mills told The Ada News. “He really adapted to the style we play about the time the playoffs got here.”
Tenequer scored 24 points in a regional tournament victory over Weleetka and followed that up with 23 points during the Mustangs’ first playoff loss to Rattan. He helped Allen to upset wins over No. 10 Velma-Alma and No. 7 Wright City to set up the classic rematch with the Rams.
“I think he’s going to be a fine player. He’s bought into everything we’re doing. I’m pretty happy with him,” Mills said. “He fits in with our other kids really well and is a good team player.”
Tenequer averaged 14.3 points per game overall during his freshman campaign and also had 103 rebounds, 70 assists and 69 steals.
Mills said one of his best attributes was getting to the basket.
“He’s a really good finisher. He’s my penetrator,” Mills said. “He was at the end of a lot of fast breaks for us.”
While Tenequer continued to improve as the season progressed, so did Allen as a group.
“It took us all as a team until dad gum near the playoffs to really get everything straightened out. After everyone kind of figured things out and accepted their roles, we took off and really started playing some good basketball,” Mills said.
The Allen coach believes the best is yet to come from Allen’s talented youngster.
“I think he’ll continue to get better. He plays pretty hard on defense. I want him to continue to get better and improve as a complete player,” Mills said.
