Tension Rises as Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney’s Camps Clash in Times Square

There’s still clear animosity between Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney, and the tension extends beyond just the fighters themselves.

Though they're each set to face different opponents during this visit to New York, that didn’t prevent their camps from trading verbal jabs at Tuesday’s public workout in Times Square.

As Garcia was being gloved up by trainer Derrick James, he and Bill Haney — Devin Haney’s father and trainer — engaged in a heated exchange, drawing a reaction from the crowd on hand.

The rivalry between Garcia and Haney traces back to their amateur days, where they split six bouts evenly with three wins each. Their long-anticipated professional clash finally came on April 20, 2024, with Haney’s WBC junior welterweight title on the line.

Garcia scored three knockdowns and was initially awarded a majority decision victory, but the result was later overturned after he failed multiple tests for performance-enhancing drugs.

During the media workout, Bill Haney interrupted Garcia’s segment, remarking that Garcia appeared softer since making the jump to 147 pounds.

“His dad likes to talk a lot. … That’s what got his son beat the first time,” said Garcia in media reports. “It is what it is. If he wants to do that again, we can run it.”

“Right now Ramirez is on my menu,” Haney said. “Once I finish my breakfast, I’ll move on to my lunch. … We all know what the people want to see. There’s unfinished business there. But I have to finish what’s in front of me first.”

Now, for the first time since their bout, Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) and Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) are set to appear on the same fight card this Friday in Times Square, New York. Garcia is slated to take on Rolando "Rolly" Romero (16-2, 13 KOs), while Haney is scheduled to meet former unified junior welterweight champion Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) in a 144-pound catchweight contest.
