Liverpool are about to claim their 20th league title, matching the Manchester United mark.
While 1992/1993 was the first Premier League triumph, numerous English First Division victories fill the silverware cabinets of both clubs.
This current season, however, showed a stark contrast between the two clubs. While United are only seemingly now with the right manager (although there is debate among the fanbase there), Liverpool managed a seamless transition from Jürgen Klopp to Arne Slot.
Completely different changeovers
Now, at even levels with 20 league wins each, the 21st trophy would give the edge to either club in that regard. If needing to pick now between LFC or MUFC, it would be difficult to back Man Utd to retake the lead that they had held on to for so long.
Granted, there are questions surrounding the sustainability of Slot’s side to be able to repeat this past campaign’s performances. Mo Salah has since slowed down after his earlier incredible run. Trent Alexander-Arnold, by a lot of accounts, is on his way to teaming up with Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid.
Still, it says something that Slot has managed to win the EPL by a comfortable enough margin that even with the dip in form, no one credibly believes that Arsenal will be able to catch up. He’s come in and won it all in his first year.
Contrast that with United over the years since Sir Alex Ferguson left, and it’s been a carousel of disasters. Some loyalist sects for each since-departed manager exist, but even for them, they know that the standard has dramatically dropped throughout the club. Certainly, there hasn’t been someone who took over who had as strong a spell compared to the club that will now go even in titles.
Some needed aspects at Man Utd
The first order of business needs to be to back Amorim. He’s taken over mid-year, and even taking his record since Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim stint hasn’t been pretty. This is particularly true in the Prem. The Portuguese manager needs the full backing of the club. His not worrying about getting points in the final matches just has to be the case at the moment. Firing and hiring someone else heading into the 2025-2026 campaign will not help in any aspect.
Then the signings need to actually fit the system. The pocketbooks have been opened before, and an odd clash of those already on the squad with those who don’t align with the person in charge has doomed ManU in the past.
Amorim plays in his version of a 3-4-3. Everyone knows this. The transfers need to fit accordingly. Grabbing an outside midfielder who can’t track back or a central attacking player who can’t handle being isolated at times, for example, would be immediate non-starters.
Despite the latest loss to Wolves, there is room for optimism. The exhilarating but somewhat concerning win against a 10-man Lyon, Amorim-ball, is also showing promise. Maybe the 21st league trophy is only a dream for now. This upcoming season is about getting back in contention again. Teams haven’t shown the ability to stay at the top for too long, however. As that continues to happen, Man Utd need to be ready, but first, they need to help themselves.
