Could the Indianapolis Colts fill their need at the tight end position through the trade market? There are options reportedly out there.
Among the names that have been floated out there this offseason as potential trade candidates at the tight end position are Las Vegas' Michael Mayer, Philadelphia's Dallas Goedert, and Baltimore's Mark Andrews.
We all know that tight end is a major need for the Colts. Last season, their entire tight end room combined for just 467 receiving yards the entire year.
With a so-so free agency class, the draft was always going to be the coveted avenue for the Colts when it came to addressing this need. And even with these potential trade candidates, the draft is still going to be option A for GM Chris Ballard.
For one, that player will have an inexpensive rookie deal. In addition to that, incoming rookies are young and presumably ascending players heading towards their prime years. You also don't have to trade away any picks to acquire them, and there is no contract to inherit, as there would be with Andrews or Goedert.
However, there is a risk that comes with going into the NFL draft and feeling like you have to address a certain position because, with so many variables in play, you can never be quite certain about who is going to be available when picking or how quick of an impact that player can make.
The safer move is acquiring the player who is well-known. With their body of work at the NFL level, you know what player you're getting, how they fit into your offense, and you don't run the risk of wondering whether or not they will be on the draft board when you're picking.
The downside to that approach is the larger contract--and potential extension that has to come with Goedert or Andrews--less upside, and parting with draft capital to make the deal, which means less resources to address other needs in the NFL draft.
If trading for a tight end is anywhere on the Colts' radar, it is likely contingent on first seeing what happens in the NFL draft. If they don't get the prospect they want, given the huge need that is there currently on the roster, perhaps Ballard would consider it afterward, but first, the prudent move would be to see how the draft unfolds.
