PGA Tour's coronavirus worries escalate as two more players withdraw from Rocket Mortgage Classic

The PGA Tour’s coronavirus “issues” have escalated with two more pros testing positive before this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit. Both America’s Harris English and South African Dylan Frittelli have withdrawn from the £6 million event as the Covid-19 issue looms ever more ominous for the circuit that resumed three weeks ago. That makes it 10 players who have been obliged to scratch the last two events - and that was before the on-site testing began for this week’s event. Jay Monahan, the Tour’s commissioner insisted last week that these positive tests remain within the expected ratio, but the concerns will inevitably grow. English did not play in last week’s Travelers Championship - won in such style by Dustin Johnson to return to the world’s top three - and was shocked when he was pulled out soon after arrival at the Detroit Golf Club. “I feel healthy,” English said. “I’m pleased that the new safety protocols we have in place worked this week. I fully support the Tour’s new rule of not allowing anyone on the tournament grounds until testing negative, as protecting others in the field and everyone affiliated with the tournament and the community should be the No. 1 priority as a result of a positive test. I appreciate the Tour’s support and I look forward to competing again after I’m fully recovered.” Frittelli played with England’s Ian Poulter in the first two rounds last week, but it is understood that Poulter - who was not due to play this week - has tested negative and returned home to Orlando. Frittelli missed the cut in Connecticut last Friday but failed the test when arriving to board the Tour’s charter to fly from Connecticut to Michigan. “I am experiencing no issues and feel great physically and was surprised and disappointed to learn of the positive test today,” Frittelli said.
